Cycle down Haleakala after watching the sunrise!

View the sunrise at the rim of the crater. Experience a self-guided 23 mile bike ride down the mountain.

The Sunrise Special arrives at Haleakala’s 10,023' summit to view the sunrise at the rim of the crater. You’ll be given a guided van tour (1 to 1 1/2 hours) of the park and will watch the sunrise at the crater. You’ll then be taken just outside of the park’s entrance at 6,500' feet where we’ll furnish Kona mountain bikes, helmets, backpacks, rain/wind gear, gloves and a map with points of interest. Experience a self-guided 23 mile bike ride down the mountain. The independent nature of this activity does allow for varied return times depending on your own rate and possible stops.

Some call it the eighth wonder of the world, others call it a “power center”. It is all that and more. At once forbidding and compelling, Haleakala National Park is Maui’s main natural attraction. Just going up the mountain is quite an experience, let alone biking down! No where else can you climb from sea level to 10,023' in less than an hour. At the summit, the 3,000' deep crater you peer down into is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide and 21 miles in circumference. Big enough to contain Manhattan!

Inclusions: Helmet, backpack, gloves and rain/wind gear. Transportation from our shop to the Summit and a narrated tour of Haleakala National Park.

Special Notes: Bikes available are adult sized bikes and require that the child be at least 12 years old with substantial biking experience. They must be at least 4’10” and comfortably fit an XS adult bike. We recommend that you consider the pros and cons of your younger children coming along for the ride. Make sure they’re up for a very big bike ride and are steady and comfortable on a bike. Safety and fun are the two goals for every bike ride, and you are responsible for both! Van Tours are always available for children, pregnant women, less experienced riders, and family members.

The sunrise tour to the Haleakala is phantastic. Okay- you have to go up early (around 2 AM or even earlier) - it's freezing cold (so wear warm clothes) - but it's really worth to do it. The guide was very good and explained interesting details about different things of the volcano crater and about some other things. The tour was very good organized and the whole staff was very helpful. Clearly recommended to see the wonderful sunrise and have good fun while driving down by bike.

My teenage daughter and I did the self guided sunrise tour. We were staying in kanaapali so with a 75 minute drive, we woke up at 1:45am to get ready and be there by 3:30. For this reason, it makes sense to do this activity the day after you arrive in Hawaii while your body hasn’t yet adjusted to time zone change. I was pleasantly surprised to see they offered us vest, gloves jacket and leggings. Even though it was 82 degrees when we left, it was 48 at the summit and with the wind chill was probably close to freezing so we were glad we had these. Do NOT fail to dress warmly but with clothes that will you can layer and easily peel off. Also you probably won’t have a chance to eat until probably 9 at the earliest so bring snacks if people if your party need them. The experience was relative crowded but amazing with fantastic pictures. Ten minutes after sunrise you are basically done. Our guide Bill was friendly and gave us lots of good information about the area. Eddie and bill were both very thorough about route with a hard copy map (which needs scale lines because otherwise distance and time are hard to judge but that’s a nitpicky issue) and potential safety pitfalls or places that you could make a wrong turn. We took some fun jumping pictures and then got on the bikes for the 90 minute ride downhill. If you can pedal at all and steer you will be fine as long as you don’t try to zoom down. My daughter is fourteen and a nervous biker but did ok and the bikes are well maintained. We stopped at Kula lodge for breakfast on the way down which was a good decision and roughly half way down. There were probably no negatives about the experience except that I might have liked a few minutes more at the summit and lookout to see the crater. You end back at the shop where you started. Altogether I’d definitely recommend this and for me it was the highlight of our trip.

Everything was fantastic! Eddie, Corey, and Jackie were great to work with, on time, helpful, fun, and smart. We did the sunrise tour and they kept the early ride up the mountain light and fun with facts/info. Sunrise was absolutely beautiful and Sunrise Special and the staff ensured we were on time, prepared, etc. Equipment, people, activity, everything 5/5. Just be ready for cold weather/wind and a very early morning (2am) if you do the sunrise. Thanks!
