Cycle down Haleakala after watching the sunrise!

View the sunrise at the rim of the crater. Experience a self-guided 23 mile bike ride down the mountain.

The Sunrise Special arrives at Haleakala’s 10,023' summit to view the sunrise at the rim of the crater. You’ll be given a guided van tour (1 to 1 1/2 hours) of the park and will watch the sunrise at the crater. You’ll then be taken just outside of the park’s entrance at 6,500' feet where we’ll furnish Kona mountain bikes, helmets, backpacks, rain/wind gear, gloves and a map with points of interest. Experience a self-guided 23 mile bike ride down the mountain. The independent nature of this activity does allow for varied return times depending on your own rate and possible stops.

Some call it the eighth wonder of the world, others call it a “power center”. It is all that and more. At once forbidding and compelling, Haleakala National Park is Maui’s main natural attraction. Just going up the mountain is quite an experience, let alone biking down! No where else can you climb from sea level to 10,023' in less than an hour. At the summit, the 3,000' deep crater you peer down into is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide and 21 miles in circumference. Big enough to contain Manhattan!

Inclusions: Helmet, backpack, gloves and rain/wind gear. Transportation from our shop to the Summit and a narrated tour of Haleakala National Park.

Special Notes: Bikes available are adult sized bikes and require that the child be at least 12 years old with substantial biking experience. They must be at least 4’10” and comfortably fit an XS adult bike. We recommend that you consider the pros and cons of your younger children coming along for the ride. Make sure they’re up for a very big bike ride and are steady and comfortable on a bike. Safety and fun are the two goals for every bike ride, and you are responsible for both! Van Tours are always available for children, pregnant women, less experienced riders, and family members.

Today, we rose wickedly early in the morning in order to see the sunrise on Haleakala. The tour was called the Sunrise Special. We had to report to the bike shop by 3:00am ... but it was sooo worth it. We had Billy for a guide and Jeff as a driver. Billy shared so much Hawaiian history with us; it was truly impressive. We had the most perfect weather in which to witness the sunrise at the rim of Haleakala. Afterwards, we were driven back down the mountain to ~7,000 ft. We were instructed on bike safety and put on mountain bikes. We rode 22 scenic miles back to the bike shop. This was a wonderful trip easily completed by skilled and not so skilled cyclists. Thank you Sunrise Special for an experience we will never forget. Mahalo

My husband and I did the sunrise bike tour of Mt. Haleakala. We left Kehei at @:15am to get to haiku by 3:00am. Yes, that was a bit rough. Once we got to shop, we were fitted with helmet gloves and backpack to store clothes. We had a briefing on how to use the bikes and then a group of us got in van for journey up Mt. Haleakala. Our van guide, Tim, was fantastic, Very funny and knowledgeable and kept us all awake. Learned alot about Maui. Tim also recommended restaurants and places to see in Maui. We arrived at the top and it was COLD!! I think temp was 38. The visitor center was not open yet so some of us remained in van. A little while later, the rangers came and I saw the sunrise from inside the center, Pretty awesome to be above the crowds. We were there on a Sunday and a Hawaiian Lady was singing a song from above the cliffs. Wonderful. At 6:40am, the van drove us down the mountain (6000 Feet or so) to begin our bike ride. MY husband and I loved it. I have a fear of heights and still did great. There are switchback turns but manageable. Stay close to right side as cars are on the same road as you. WE stopped at a wonderful restaurant around half way down with a great brunch. Remember to wear layers as it gets pretty warm the farther you descend. There were 3 hills. Not too bad, but I did walk my bike up two of them. We rode the bikes back to the bike rental and it was an amazing day!! It was truly exhilarating and highly recommend. I felt proud I completed the journey

We went on the Haleakala Sunrise tour, which was very good. After everyone was equipped with helmets and some other gear (they provide rain gear, gloves or even backpacks if you don't have any) we startet our bus ride up the Haleakala where our tour guide gave us some first information about the downhill ride for later. We watched the sunrise at Haleakala crater rim and had plenty of time for that. We stopped at one more photo location and our guide took some great photos for us before everyone was equipped with a mountain bike and a map. The downhill ride is so much fun. Just let gravity do its job. There are some nice stops on the way where you can stop for lunch or just coffee. Our tour was self guided so we enjoyed riding at our own pace. All in all a great way to spend the morning. Just one thing: There was some great information about Haleakala Nationalpark, plants and wildlife, history of Maui and so on but it was WAY TO MUCH for 3am in the morning ;)
