Discover Lanai

Trilogy Excursions (4.7)

The best way to experience Lana'i

Set sail from the harbor and enjoy breakfast on board. Then get ready for a day of swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, beach volleyball and the increasingly popular SNUBA. Head off on an optional tour of Lana'i town before tucking into a tasty Kiawe wood BBQ overlooking Manele Bay.

We depart from Lahaina Harbor at around 10 am (seasonally we offer a sunrise departure at 6:30 am--this is the "Crew's Favorite"!) for the one and a half hour sail to this very special island. Because we are the only company with permission to bring guests to Hulopo'e Marine Preserve, we pay close attention to both your safety and comfort. Our crew, as well as our island-born Beach Boys, are trained in CPR and First Aid and are experts at ensuring your safety in and out of the water. For those wanting to deepen their ocean adventure, we recommend upgrading to SNUBA.

Besides swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, and beach volleyball, we also offer a guided tour of Lana'i's historic plantation town narrated by island-born Cultural Guides. Our Kiawe wood BBQ dinner, served at the Hale O Manele overlooking Manele Bay, is considered by many to be one of the best in Hawai'i! The return sail to Maui can be restful and relaxing, or wet & wild, but it is always safe and lots of fun. So whether you are a sunrise or sunset kind-of-person, many of our guests write to tell us that Discovering Lana'i was the highlight of their whole vacation! Come out and discover for yourself why we have been chosen #1 sailing company on Maui for over 42 years.

Do this, don’t wait! Discover Lanai is like private excursion to an exclusive beach! Our crew (Captain Turtle, Brayden, Angelo, Lol & Alissa) did not disappoint! Fun, courteous, knowledgeable & will make the hours fly by. You know it’s a great company when their crew has been there for many years. Enjoy snorkeling or snuba, beach time, hiking, Lanai City tour, great food & some true sailing off at sunset. The views are incredible. I’m no photographer but you don’t have to worry because there’s a crew member that takes care of capturing your trip & all those underwater shots too. Snuba & photos are an extra cost but totally worth it, & absolutely no pressure involved. You’ll leave with a belly full of food, a smile on your face, and a plan to for your next Trilogy excursion! I’ve used other tour companies here but this company is far better, a real 5 star.

The Discover Lana'i trip was 100% worth the $220 per person it costs. I am careful about how I spend money on vacation and I felt based on other reviews I read that I would go for it. I was not disappointed! This trip exceeded my expectations. If you are on the fence, do it. I'm going to address some of the things I was looking for in a review and that it seems others look for: 1) Will I see dolphins? Probably! We did! I actually chose this cruise because it is a Dolphin Smart business and does not force dolphin interactions or otherwise harass dolphins. It sounds like people see them all the time on this trip, but dolphin sightings were not guaranteed on the Discover Lana'i tour. There is a pod in the channel between Maui and Lana'i and I did the early morning trip when the dolphins are finishing up their feeding for the night. They typically sleep and are less active during the day but they came and surfed our bow for about 30 minutes on the trip to Lana'i. In addition, on the way back we lucked out and saw false killer whales! The crew said this only happens about 2 times a year but I was so excited and felt so lucky I could hardly contain myself. Lots of marine life this trip! 2) Solo travel - I did this trip as a solo traveler and I had a great time, everyone was friendly, there was time to be by myself if I wanted but plenty of time to socialize. I never felt unsafe or not part of the group. 3) Food - I am a vegetarian (not vegan - I do eat eggs and dairy) and let them know ahead of time. Really the only thing I couldn't eat was the bacon and egg sandwich for breakfast and the BBQ chicken, everything else was delicious and they had plenty of alternatives for me. 4) Is this trip good for kids? Definitely for older kids yes! There was only one kid on our trip (about 12 years old) and he had a blast. Trilogy's website says kids are welcome and encouraged and they were very safety conscious so I'm sure anyone would be fine. I think I would have been nervous bringing young kids under 5 years old because at times the boat was little rough (in the wind in the afternoon) and waves at any beach can get high (when you're heading out to snorkel). If you have kids who can swim well and listen to directions I think everyone would have a good time.

Went on the Discover Lana’i trip with Captain Turtle and Dan and Lol and Brent. This was by far one of if not the best excursion I had during my time at Maui. Very interactive crew that makes sure everyone is safe and accounted for and they are all super easy going and talkative. For me traveling solo amongst a bunch of couples and families this was what I consider to be “A+” hospitality. Food on the trip was good, drinks on the way back were good and the barbecue was great. You have to go see sweetheart rock and snorkel both were awesome, the island tour was also very informative and cool. All in all great trip, worth every penny!
