For a middle aged guy with an after market knee and terrible balance, I don’t know what got into me to try a stand up paddle board. Success! The folks in the shop set me up with probably the easiest board, paddle and surf shoes. After a few simple instructions I threw care to the wind and gave it a shot. Each time up was a bit longer than the one before and in about 15 minutes I could stay up for quite a while. Fantastic time and can’t recommend it enough. They had all the stuff and for a reasonable price. If I can do it, anybody can.
At the recommendation of my travel companion, I tried paddle-boarding for the first time in Kihei. We started out with an on-ground lesson from our guide BoobieShack, whose dry humor put us at ease. After the lesson, we got our paddles and boards (heavy!) and headed across the road to the water. I was able to successfully stand up and navigate the waters with a little encouragement from BoobieShack and only a couple pain-free dips in the ocean. About 15 minutes in, we were treated to a playful visit by a young manta ray who hung around our group for several minutes. It was a magical! The whole experience was fabulous and we can’t wait to go back. Show less
I've never really had to take lessons like this and I didn't know what to expect. Took a stand up paddle boarding class and it was fun. Kaimi (sp?) was our instructor. My friend and I had opted for semi-private lessons because she was familiar with paddle boarding while I was not. While it was challenging for me, as I was watching other people surf, I kept thinking I should've surfed because I had grown up surfing. I felt really uncoordinated with the paddle and standing on the board. In the end, I was able to do things in a way that was comfortable for me. I'd recommend this place because the 'group lesson' ended up being just myself and our instructor, Kaimi. We thought there would be others. Just us! It felt like we had our own super private session. Overall this was such a positive experience. I was a bit apprehensive because I didn't know how our instructor would be or if I'd like the shop in general. The woman working the front desk was so sweet and helpful -- she watched my car keys, phone, and credit cards because I didn't feel safe leaving them in the cubby hole that was unattended. Her only requirement was that my phone be on silent. I could deal with that. This place was great and so friendly. They put my fears to rest and I would gladly return.
